Alan Axon PDF Print E-mail

presenters_Alan

Alan started on KCR in 2007 however he was involved in the music industry long before that with a mobile DJ business as well as singing. He quotes his favourite song as being “Butterfly Kisses” and his favourite music style as middle of the road rock from the 1960-1980’s

Alan’s golden voice can be heard on the Sunday Session, Sunday evenings from 7-9pm. Alan plays listeners requests along with a range of popular music and information about songs and the artists.

Bernie Maher PDF Print E-mail

Bernie moved to Perth in 1983 but didn’t find his way into broadcasting until 2006 when he started here on KCR on Boxing Day.

He recounts his most embarrassing moment on air was the day he was choking fit and with eyes watering he couldn’t see the buttons to turn off the “on air” button! A long way from the first musical influence – a Suzi Quatro album, which isn’t even on his most favourite musical piece of all time, that honour goes to Mr. Tom Wait.

These days when not looking after his chooks, well most people don’t count their eggs as pets! Bernie can be found here on a Sunday morning bringing us Christian music with ‘rhythm and praise’. Bernie is a fan of world music and when asked what 5 people he would like to have dinner with named: Tom Waits, Nelson Mandela, Alvin Slaughter, Rueben Monsan and Bill Gates.

Brad Noak PDF Print E-mail

presenters_Brad

A local lad Brad began his broadcasting career in Fremantle on 100FM as well as testing the waters out at REDFM.  The first album Brad purchased doesn’t give any indication of his love of music, as it was one of the cassettes from McDonalds.

He has improved in style and taste and he says his most favourite piece is Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”. This fits in with Brad’s current styles of Classic Rock, Mod Pop and classic instrumental.

After his family Brad’s other passion is the Fender Stratocaster which suggest a rocker from way back, so why not tune into his program “Loaded” for 2 hours of live radio entertainment that includes countdowns, artist specials and albums played in their entirety. Brad’s tones can be heard on many a “voice over’s” as he has a strong interest in this field.

Coral PDF Print E-mail

presenters_Coral

Coral began her association with KCR in the late 1990’s behind the scenes, sorting the records out for the station. After brief stint away from the station, Coral then started presenting on the air. Although this wasn’t Coral’s first venture into the public music domain- that was as a member of a choir in the 1950’s, the choir society’s loss was community radio’s gain.

A menagerie of animals (2 dogs, 1 budgie and 4 chooks) keep Coral busy along with a passion for roses, we can hear her program on Sundays (alternating) form 1-3pm

Coral describes her program- ‘Music My Way With Coral’ as varied musically specifically aimed at the Sunday afternoon listener, relaxing or new pieces with a leaning towards light classical and Irish, anything with a good melody.

Denni PDF Print E-mail

Denni Began her radio career with York Community Radio and then after taking a few months off to indulge her travel addiction, she joined Kalamunda Community Radio ( KCR 102.5FM) in November 2005.

Denni currently presents ‘Anything Goes’ followed by ‘Kalamunda Café’ from 11.00am till 1.00pm during which she plays light luncheon music with a different theme each week. The program includes interviews with people discussing issues of community interest. These include an officer from the Police Crime Prevention Unit: various Directors from forthcoming local community theatre productions: tutors of the various courses from the Kalamunda Learning Center and representatives from different areas of the Kalamunda Shire Offices to name just a few.

Denni has recently written and produces a serialised radio play which will be going to air on KCR 102.5FM early February 2010.

Wherever Denni goes, Henry goes too….Henry being her little and very affectionate dog. So, if you happen to hear an occasional ‘woof’ in the background when Denni is on air, it will probably mean either the postie or the garbage men are doing their rounds!

Dr Jazz PDF Print E-mail

drjazz_2His love of jazz developed when, at the age of 15, he first listened to Charlie Parker and Miles Davis -- from an album recorded in 1947. He knew then that he was "hooked", and that no other musical style spoke to him in quite the same way.

From the violin, Dr. Jazz then studied the saxophone, beginning with an antique C-melody instrument before moving on to master both the alto and tenor sax.

Enjoying playing various styles of jazz with a variety of musicians, Dr. Jazz's love of music became his driving force.  His greatest influences were Paul Desmond, Stan Getz and Charles Lloyd -- in fact, his first record purchase was a Stan Getz album on the MFP (Music For Pleasure) label, featuring Jimmy Raney on guitar.

In 1997, Dr. Jazz moved to Australia, bringing with him his passion for jazz -- a passion now shared with others via community radio.

Joining Kalamunda Community Radio (KCR 102.5 FM) in April 2009, his programme Ten 'til Late is a blend of styles from artists all over the globe -- from bebop, free jazz, jazz funk, and fusion to smooth.

Dr Jazz’s programme goal is to promote Australian jazz artists, be they vocal or instrumental.

Elliott Chipper and Bobby Tiong PDF Print E-mail

You can hear Elliott and Bobby on Tuesday’s on the Bobby and Chipper Show from 6-8pm, which they describe as “two guys getting together having a chat about music, playing some of our favourite tracks. And having a good time.  Elliott was only 12yrs old when he started on KCR back in 2000, Bobby joined in 2009.

Garry Slinger PDF Print E-mail

Garry has been on radio at York FM as well as 88FM, Ellenbrook before moving to KCR where he presents the breakfast show on Wednesday and Friday mornings 6-9am. He plays music that people request either by phone or email. Garry favourite song of all time is Johnny O’Keefe’s, 6 O’clock Rock although he also likes country and all musical types. His most embarrassing moment on air was when a listener rang to tell him that he wasn’t actually broadcasting, so he now double checks the microphone switch!

Harry Nijsen PDF Print E-mail

Harry started on KCR in a non-presenting role, after offering his services to the station in 2003.Most of his time initially was behind the scenes with technical/maintenance. Harry was prompted to join the station after becoming bored, as a listener, by one genre/theme radio stations. He was impressed by the freshness of the variety that KCR offered.

Harry’s first venture into presenting was a weekend show “Weekend Wind Down” (classical music) for about 18 months, until a new willing presenter came forward.

With the release from the weekend program, Harry resumed presenting in a new role with “Anything Goes” on Friday Mornings, due to the illness of George Black.

The program consists of ‘middle of the road’ music which initially was following by 2 hours of swing jazz. These 2 hours has now been handed over to Sid Marsh who presents his program “Swing High”.

Harry’s program is a display of easy listening music with a good following by many members of the public. Harry routinely mixes his music to cover many generations of listeners and accommodates them all!

Harry has many hats at KCR, he is an active committee member and holds the position of Chairman on The Committee of Management.

Many listeners may see Harry as he also routinely represents KCR at the Village Markets once a month, as well as the technical supervisor for Kalamunda’s Carols by Candlelight, an outside broadcast from Stirk Park in Kalamunda.

Katherine Logan PDF Print E-mail

Katherine was an early learner, starting at KCR at the age of 15, initially just helping out (getting Norman’s gingernut biscuits) to eventually presenting on air.

It ignited a music passion that has branched out from presenting to also doing music reviews and interviews for an Australian Music Data Website. Some of her music favourites are Neil Young’s Cortez the Killer, The Mercy Seat by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds to Mississippi Goddamn by Nina Simone just to name but a few especially as you really need to limit the time frame – too little time too many songs!

Katherine’s other passions are cooking, the environment and helping animals, especially a cat named Tiger!

After a break from community radio, Katherine has returned more enthusiastic than ever, her program now focuses on independent artists rather than specific musical genres.

Larry PDF Print E-mail

larry_2Hilltop Blues and Larry have had a long association with Kalamunda Community Radio, roughly 9 years of pumping out some of the best blues sounds in Perth.

When Larry first started at KCR, there was a gap in the scheduling for a blues program. Larry stepped up to the plate and Hilltop Blues was born. Larry gives his audience the experience of blues music from all over the world, with featured Australian and International artists.

Larry is stretching the versatility of the Blues Program featuring podcasts and interviews direct from blues artists in the United States, courtesy of Mark Wade of A1 Blues.com.

Larry is diverse in his skills as a presenter; his smoky voice can also be heard at other times with Midday Mix on Fridays 1.00pm – 3.00pm and Magic Carpet Ride, Saturdays 6.00pm – 10.00pm.

Laurie Hills PDF Print E-mail

Laurie’s broadcasting career commenced on the other side of the nation at 2RG in Griffiths, N.S.W. along with as some show business experience in stage and theatre work.

Even though his first album was by Col Joye, Laurie has no particular music genre that he favours, his stated favourite song is “Proud of You” which one hopes he wasn’t playing the day he forgot to switch over the desk and for 1¾ hours wasn’t heard.

Laurie can be heard on his popular programme “6pm Till Late” along with the regular stints, work permitting, on Sunrise, mainly Monday and Tuesdays .Which he hopes are exciting, tasteful along with being invigorating music selections.

Macka PDF Print E-mail

The transfer of Macka from his home town to the West Coast was just 5 short years before his beginnings in radio. Macka’s first forays where a long way from KCR, he began on radio in Albany in 1994 before relocating to Perth where he joined KCR 102.5FM.

Although stating he is really passionate about not working he contributes to the station in many ways apart from his “on air” work of Mac Radio on Friday nights from 10pm.  He surprisingly admits that his first album was by some unknown band from Liverpool called “Please please me”.

The styles Macka professes to like are all, which is hardly surprising when asked which 5 people would he like to have dinner with are The Beatles(as 1) John F. Kennedy, Jennifer Aniston( for her political views perhaps?)The Marx Brothers, The Goons, The Goodies and Monty Python. This actually suggests he prefers comedy as a genre.

Mary Gibbs PDF Print E-mail

presenters_Mary

It comes as no surprise to Mary’s listeners to know that Mary started in radio in Glasgow on the BBC, although the surprise may be because she was only 14 when she began.  She also helped start radio lollipop- to anyone unfamiliar with radio lollipop it’s a radio program that broadcasts and stars the patient at Children’s Hospitals.

Mary’s passion is for anything Scottish and her family. Her favourite song of all time is “Westering Home”.

Mary’s program reflects this love of all things Scottish- Scotch on the Rocks plays all things Scottish old and new.

Max Williams PDF Print E-mail

Max supports Subiaco in the local football league which is surprising since he was born in East Fremantle. After attending a Status Quo Concert in the early 00’s with a lifelong friend they decided they wanted to become more involved in music. Which is not surprising since he has been involved in music as a musician here in Perth in the 70’ and 80’s.

He loves all types of music depending on his mood and states that Mind Games by John Lennon is special.

Max can be heard on his program ‘Time Capsule’ where he likes to play old and classic hits from the 60’s 70 and 80’s, where he likes to add stories to our familiar songs

Mike Logan PDF Print E-mail

presenters_Mike Logan

Mike has been at KCR since 2008 and recounts a most embarrassing moment when he realised that a groan said after a really long song introduction had been said with the microphone still switched on!

His passions in life are the West Coast Eagles and Wagner’s music in fact his favourite song of all time is Wagner’s Pilgrims’ Chorus.

‘Baroque and Beyond’ Wednesday’s 1-3pm highlights classical and opera with a different theme. Each week an interesting background and stories about the music and the composers is presented.

Norman left the shores of England and arrived in sunny Perth in 1972.

Harking back to a military career one understands why Norman in passionate about discipline having had a formative role in his life, now his higher ranking officer is his wife of almost 59 years.

Normans programme is best described as free and easy, ‘a mixed bag of things best described as easy listening, lunchtime Sunday music where you provide the lunch and I provide the music’

His most favourite song of all time might be yours, as it’s the fabulous Mr. Nat King Cole, singing ‘Too Young” which you might hear on “Free and Easy” Sundays from 1.00pm – 3.00pm.

Patrick Gee PDF Print E-mail

Patricks involvement in community radio can be traced back to his days in Darwin, when his vocal cords could be heard exercising on the local radio station ‘TOPFM’ in the early eighties. Darwin’s loss was Perth and KCR’s gain when Patrick relocated south.

Bob Dylan is accredited by Patrick as to be the motivating factor in his first forays into the music industry. These days his music is mostly folk based although it isn’t limited to any genre it just has to have appeal.

When not on the golf course you can find Pat on a Wednesday evening alternating with Paul, from 6-8pm.

Peter Coulstock PDF Print E-mail

KCR has been Peter’s training ground in community radio although his media career started with a stint as a Square Dance Caller! A purchase of an album by the Chirping Crickets started a lifelong interest in music although he still has to be convinced that hiphop, Rapp and modern stuff is actually music!

These days you can hear Peter play swing, trad jazz, classical folk and 50’s rock, just don’t ask him to pick a favourite song as he has too many to have just one favourite.

Peter can be heard on his program Anything Goes and like the program title anything goes on a Thursday between 9-11am.

Peter K PDF Print E-mail

Peter started on Kalamunda Community Radio (KCR 102.5FM) in 2002 after retiring and seeking new avenues of excitement in life. Peter was attracted to the station after a conversation at an RSL meeting invitation to have a look at the radio station.

Not initially thinking about presenting, it was only a week after joining that an artist gave Peter a CD for airplay. Peter was invited to play the CD on “High Noon” with Wayne B. He then co-presented on the program for about 5 years, when Wayne retired from air, then becoming the solo presenter of “High Noon”, Monday afternoons from midday for 3 hours.

Peter then spread his wings to introduce the program, ‘Kennedy Country’ to have an evening country music program. The night and time was chosen and now Wednesdays from 10pm onwards you can hear his dulcet tones. Peter promotes local and national artists on both his programs and is always on the lookout for fresh new talent to promote.

Spreading his many talents Peter also goes to air on Wednesday afternoons with ‘Traffic Jam’. Peter deviates from his country music love, to play music from the 60’s through to today with middle of the road music to get us all home from work with easy listening.
