Kalamunda Community Radio first obtained a permanent broadcasting license from the Australian Communication Authority, in March 2003, which came after years of perseverance and hard work.

The journey towards being recognised as a permanent broadcaster in Kalamunda started in 1993 when the original KCR committee was formed. However due to delays with licence area planning, the committee was disbanded. It wasn’t until 1996 that interest in developing a community radio station in Kalamunda was resurrected, in a public meeting to re-establish the association.

The new constitution that was developed aimed to begin test broadcasts in time for Kalamunda’s Centenary Celebrations at the end of 1997. This goal was achieved with just a few days to spare.

In the first ten months, KCR’s management committee raised over $13,000 in funds and equipment. With support from local MPs John Day and Derrick Tomlinson, the WA Police Service supplied their former police station to be the KCR stations headquarters. As well as this, the Shire of Kalamunda donated $5,000 for a transmitter and broadcasting equipment.

Through support of local organisations such as the RSL, the Agricultural Society, and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the perseverance and hard work of the station’s volunteers, KCR obtained its permanent broadcasting licence in 2003.

With the ongoing dedication of volunteers, Kalamunda Community Radio exists as one of WA’s most respected community radio stations, offering a diverse range of music and programs, which appeal to all audiences.

• To operate and maintain a low powered FM community broadcast station covering the Kalamunda Shire.
• To enhance community standards of entertainment, information and access, and encourage the development of professional standards in radio program production and presentation.
• To provide the local community with access to radio so community interest programs and announcements may be broadcast.
• To encourage the exposure and development of art, drama, music and theatre, with local emphasis.
• To provide an opportunity for wider and further education, in liaison with local education institutions.
• To provide a forum for debating topical and community issues.
• To provide a focal point for information, that encourages access to community services and participation in local government and community projects.
• To conduct research and training programs in the artistic and technical aspects of radio, and other forms of sound communication.
• To produce, transmit, receive, record, re-produce, broadcast or otherwise distribute- or facilitate the transmission or reception of - all forms of sound communication material.
• To assist other community groups who have similar objectives.
